The Systematic Observational Method for Narcolepsy and Influenza Immunization Assessment (SOMNIA) study: preliminary results from Ontario

Narcolepsy is a chronic neurological disorder involving loss of the brain's ability to regulate sleep-wake cycles. In fall 2009, monovalent influenza A/H1N1/pdm09 vaccines were introduced globally as a response to the influenza A/H1N1 2009 pandemic. Cases of narcolepsy in children and adolescents following vaccination with the AS03-adjuvanted Pandemrix® vaccine were reported in August 2010 by Sweden and Finland. Since 2013, Ontario has been participating in an international study funded by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to see if the AS03-adjuvanted Arepanrix® vaccine (also produced by GSK, but using a slightly different manufacturing process) was associated with narcolepsy. At this presentation, Dr. Kwong will discuss the preliminary Ontario results from this study.

Jeff Kwong is a Senior Scientist at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES), a Scientist at Public Health Ontario, a Family Physician at the Toronto Western Family Health Team, and an Associate Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine and the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto. Key research interests include infectious diseases epidemiology and health services research using linkable data, influenza vaccine and vaccination program evaluation, and assessing the health and economic burden of infectious diseases.
